On Sunday, NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series visited the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the race saw a memorable ending with a deserving winner. After the start of the race, it stayed green until lap 67, when Danica Patrick broke a rear axle on her way out of pit lane after a regular stop. The race remained green until lap 97, when Trevor Bayne hit the wall in Turn 3 after gaining a flat tire.

After the restart, the battle picked up in the front between teammates Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon, who had worked their way to the first and second positions. The dueling was paused with 21 laps to go when the car of Ryan Truex lost power. He was unable to get his slowing car to pit lane before it died, bringing out the final caution of the day. When the green flag waved once more, Jeff Gordon was able to get a better restart, while Kahne fell back through the field.

Gordon then went on to win the race, with the victory coming twenty years after he won the inaugural Brickyard 400 and ten years after he last won the race. The win is also Gordon’s fifth at Indy, tying him with Formula One’s Michael Schumacher for most wins at the track. Gordon now has 90 career victories under his belt in the series.

Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth, and Joey Logano rounded out the top five.
